Where to go from Ubuntu 10.10 (part 2)?

Unfortunately Mint LMDE was not the answer to a replacement for Ubuntu. After spending some time fixing install issues and package dependencies, I wanted to add Nvidia support, which went misserably wrong. Even with following the installation guide from the Mint community the system simply turned black after reboot.
I am relatively sure that had the installation been the Mint 11 instead of Mint LMDE, it would have worked flawless. The fact that Mint 11 is based off Ubuntu indicate to me that they too will be switching to Unity at some point, which was really the purpose of this whole exercise, to get rid of Unity.
My next test will be a native Debian install and work my way through setting it up to become my next production environment.
After trying out Debian I soon realized that I wanted so much more from a desktop environment without having to go through a hazzle, just to get a DVD playing or support for non-free codecs. Don't get me wrong, obviously I like the Debian approach to things and I have it running on 50+ servers. It just didn't feel like a desktop OS.
The quest for a replacement desktop operating system continues......
